It all happens in the blink of an eye: one minute, you are bringing home a puppy from the shelter. He’s wild and rambunctious, confident and playful. He makes you laugh and sometimes his curiousity makes you worry. Then, you blink. Suddenly, he is slower, gentler, and a little more cautious, and his color seems to be have been rubbed off and replaced with white and grey fur. Suddenly, his puppy energy has been replaced with wisdom, intelligence, and an innate knowledge in matters of protecting the family. This is your senior dog.
At almost ten-years-old, Rocky’s care is different than it was when he was a puppy. He doesn’t run like a greyhound anymore, or leap like a racehorse into the car. He sleeps a bit more, is a bit more achy, and often battles through episodes of tracheal collapse. I know that there are probably a lot of families out there that can relate with the change of their dog aging, some of them with tales of loyalty and trust built just as Rocky has held ours for years. With a dog like that, we owe it to them to care for them to the best of our ability. So, in addition to sharing Rocky’s story, these are the five items that have truly helped us in caring for our Senior dog, followed by the story of our best and most trusted friend.
Please note that none of these reviews are sponsored, this is simply an honest list of what helps our senior dog. Consult your veterinarian before giving your dog new medications or food products.

This product has been incredible for Rocky’s arthritis and anxiety. As he grows older, he is prone to anxious peeing and ankle sprain. This product has helped to ease his pain so much and is available on Amazon.

Sometimes, our seniors just need a little extra nutrients to get them by! This multivitamin by Pet Honesty helps with hip and joint support, and is fortified with key vitamins and antioxidants for immunity.

With Rocky being prone to ankle sprains, restricting the limb is often time sensitive and essential. This Compression Wrap by the Labra Store on Amazon is super handy to have on those days when Rocky attempts a stunt as if he is still only a puppy, and is available not just for hind-leg injuries, but front leg and shoulder injuries as well.

Hubby and I made the decision to purchase this ramp after Rocky’s first major ankle injury. While we were distracted lifting Peanut and my wheelchair into the car, a high jump from the garage floor into the back of our family’s minivan resulted in a horrible sprain that had Rocky limping for a few days and his ankle swollen. The result was the purchase of these stairs, to hopefully deter Rocky from jumping again.

No one really likes to talk body fluids, but let’s be honest: older dogs are more prone to accidents. And whether you take them out every two hours or have a doggy door (impossible in Las Vegas near coyote territory) you may at some point be face with a carpet accident. This cleaner is a proper lifesaver during Rocky’s anxious pee episodes, and truly helps eliminate that strong urine odor without being overpowering and unpleasant.
